Statue of Liberty
France's colossal copper gift to America — the world's most famous symbol of freedom, guarding New York Harbor.
Overview
The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable monuments on Earth and the enduring symbol of freedom and democracy, rising 93 meters from base to torch on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. A gift from the people of France to the United States, dedicated in 1886, the colossal copper statue depicts Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty, holding a torch aloft and a tablet inscribed with the date of American independence.
Designed by the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi with an internal iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel, 'Lady Liberty' greeted millions of immigrants arriving by ship at nearby Ellis Island, becoming a beacon of hope and opportunity. Her copper skin has weathered to its familiar green patina, and she remains a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a powerful global icon.
