Brooklyn Bridge
A pioneering 19th-century suspension bridge with Gothic stone arches linking Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Overview
The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest and most celebrated suspension bridges in the United States, spanning the East River to connect Manhattan and Brooklyn in New York City. Completed in 1883 after 14 years of construction, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time, with a main span of 486 meters, and the first to use steel cables — a revolutionary design by John A. Roebling and his son Washington.
Its iconic Gothic-arched stone towers and the graceful web of its cables have made it a beloved symbol of New York and a marvel of Gilded Age engineering. An elevated wooden pedestrian promenade down the center, raised above the traffic, offers one of the most famous walks in the world, with sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline, the harbor, and the Statue of Liberty.
