Tower Bridge
London's iconic Victorian bascule bridge, its twin Gothic towers rising over the Thames.
Overview
Tower Bridge is one of London's most famous landmarks, a combined bascule and suspension bridge spanning the River Thames beside the Tower of London. Completed in 1894 after eight years of construction, its two grand Gothic-style towers, linked by high-level walkways and connected to the roadway by massive lifting bascules, were designed to allow tall ships to pass while blending with the nearby medieval Tower.
The road deck still splits and rises to let ships through — originally powered by steam-driven hydraulics, now by electric motors — and the high walkways, once notorious haunts, today offer glass-floored views over the river and the bascules. Often mistakenly called 'London Bridge,' Tower Bridge is a Victorian engineering marvel and an enduring symbol of London.
