Highgate Cemetery
London's atmospheric Victorian cemetery, overgrown and gothic, resting place of Karl Marx.
Overview
Highgate Cemetery in north London is the most famous of the city's grand Victorian cemeteries, celebrated for its atmospheric, romantically overgrown grounds and elaborate Gothic monuments. Opened in 1839 as part of a ring of private cemeteries built to relieve London's overcrowded churchyards, Highgate became a fashionable and dramatic place of burial, with winding paths, ivy-draped tombs, and striking features like the Egyptian Avenue and the Circle of Lebanon.
Its most visited grave is that of Karl Marx, marked by a large bust, but it is also the resting place of many notable figures, and its wild, tree-shrouded West Cemetery — explored only by guided tour — is hauntingly beautiful. A working cemetery and a nature haven as well as a Victorian time capsule, Highgate is one of London's most evocative places.
