Jones Gap State Park
Jones Gap State Park protects a rugged Blue Ridge gorge along the Middle Saluda River — South Carolina's first state scenic river — with waterfalls, deep forest and miles of wilderness trails.
Overview
Jones Gap State Park protects a rugged and beautiful gorge in the Blue Ridge escarpment of the South Carolina Upstate, where the clear, rushing Middle Saluda River — the state’s first designated scenic river — tumbles through a deep, forested valley of waterfalls, mossy boulders and steep mountain slopes. Together with neighboring Caesars Head State Park, Jones Gap forms the heart of the Mountain Bridge Wilderness and Recreation Area, a wild expanse of mountain backcountry.
The park follows the historic route of the old Jones Gap Road, a 19th-century toll road through the mountains, now a trail along the river. Miles of rugged trails wind through the gorge and the surrounding wilderness, past numerous waterfalls and into the high backcountry, linking to Caesars Head and the broader trail network. Lush, cool and biologically rich, with its scenic river, waterfalls and deep forest, Jones Gap is a treasured wilderness destination for hikers and nature lovers in the South Carolina mountains.
Recreation
Jones Gap State Park offers rugged wilderness recreation — hiking miles of trails through the gorge along the Middle Saluda River and into the Mountain Bridge Wilderness, past numerous waterfalls and into the high backcountry, with connections to Caesars Head and the broader trail network. Backpacking with backcountry campsites, fishing the trout waters of the scenic river, nature study and birding round out the experience. The combination of the scenic river, the waterfalls, the deep forest and the rugged wilderness trails makes Jones Gap a premier and beloved destination for hikers in the South Carolina Upstate.
Best Time to Visit
Spring brings the fullest waterfalls and wildflowers, while fall brings spectacular color to the gorge and escarpment, a premier autumn time. Summer offers cool relief in the shaded river gorge, and winter quiet trails and bare-forest views. The waterfalls are best after rain and in spring; fall color and the cool summer gorge are highlights. The rugged trails reward visits year-round; the park and wilderness are busiest on warm-season and fall weekends, so arrive early to enjoy the river, waterfalls and backcountry.
History
Jones Gap State Park follows the historic route of the Jones Gap Road, a toll road built through the rugged mountains in the mid-19th century by Solomon Jones to link the South Carolina lowlands with the North Carolina mountains — an engineering feat of its day, now a scenic trail along the Middle Saluda River. The river became South Carolina’s first designated state scenic river. Protected as a state park anchoring the Mountain Bridge Wilderness with neighboring Caesars Head, Jones Gap preserves the historic route, the scenic river, the waterfalls and the rugged wilderness for the public.
Geology
Jones Gap lies in the Blue Ridge escarpment, where the high mountains drop steeply to the South Carolina Piedmont, and the Middle Saluda River has carved a rugged gorge into the hard, ancient crystalline rock of the highlands. The resistant rock forms the steep slopes, the boulders and the ledges over which the numerous waterfalls tumble as the streams cut back into the escarpment. The steep escarpment, the down-cutting river and the long erosion created the deep gorge, the waterfalls and the rugged terrain that define the park and the surrounding Mountain Bridge Wilderness.
Wildlife
The gorge, river and forests of Jones Gap State Park host white-tailed deer, black bear, wild turkey, foxes, and a rich community of birds, including woodland species and the migrating raptors that pass along the nearby escarpment, while the clear Middle Saluda River supports trout and the cool, moist gorge shelters an exceptional diversity of salamanders — the southern Appalachians are a global salamander hotspot. The biodiverse escarpment forest supports abundant wildlife. The park is a fine place for wildlife watching and birding amid its scenic river, waterfalls and deep mountain forest.
Ecology
Jones Gap State Park, part of the Mountain Bridge Wilderness, protects a biodiverse stretch of the Blue Ridge escarpment, where the clear Middle Saluda scenic river, the deep gorge, the waterfalls, the rich forests and the varied microclimates support diverse plant and animal life, including rare plants in the gorges, trout in the cold waters, and the region’s extraordinary salamander diversity. The escarpment’s steep, varied terrain creates rich habitats. Protecting the scenic river’s water quality, the gorge, the waterfalls and the forests sustains both the ecology and the scenic beauty of this treasured Upstate wilderness.

Jones Gap’s wilderness trails are rugged and strenuous, with steep terrain, slippery rocks near the river and waterfalls, and stream crossings — carry water and food, wear sturdy footwear, watch footing, and keep back from the tops of waterfalls and cliff edges, where falls have caused injuries and deaths.
