Nebraska Sandhills
A vast region of grass-stabilized sand dunes, the largest such formation in the Western Hemisphere.
Overview
The Nebraska Sandhills are a vast region of grass-covered sand dunes blanketing much of north-central Nebraska — the largest sand-dune formation in the Western Hemisphere, covering around a quarter of the state. Unlike a barren desert, these ancient dunes are stabilized by a carpet of mixed-grass prairie, creating a rolling, hummocky sea of grass dotted with wetlands and lakes in the valleys between the hills.
Sitting atop the immense Ogallala Aquifer, the Sandhills are one of the most intact natural grasslands in the Great Plains, largely spared the plow and used instead for cattle ranching. They are a haven for grassland birds and a crucial stopover for migrating cranes and waterfowl, and their quiet, lonely beauty — endless grassy dunes under huge skies — offers a unique and little-known American landscape.
