Skookumchuck Recreation Site

Skookumchuck Recreation Site is a public swim area where the shoreline opens up for a swim and a sit in the sun in Idaho, managed by Bureau of Land Management.

It sits on wide-open BLM public land with a dispersed, big-country feel.

Swim within your limits — most sites have no lifeguard — and watch for drop-offs, currents and cold water.

The surrounding public land supports the usual mix of outdoor recreation, and anglers will find rainbow, cutthroat, brown and bull trout, kokanee, smallmouth and largemouth bass, and sturgeon in nearby waters.

Summer is the heart of the season here — warm days, long evenings and the fullest access — but also the busiest. Late spring and early fall are quieter and often more comfortable, and some access closes once winter sets in.

Skookumchuck Recreation Site is reached by public road; follow the site's posted directions for the final approach.

Check the weather and any closures before you go, carry water, and tell someone your plans. Cell service is often limited on public land — download maps in advance and be wildlife-aware where applicable.

Practice Leave No Trace: pack out all trash, stay on designated routes and roads, and respect posted rules, closures and fire restrictions — bans are common in dry summer months. Keep pets leashed where required and give wildlife room.
