Overview
Haleakalā Crater is the immense summit depression of Haleakalā, the massive shield volcano that forms the bulk of the Hawaiian island of Maui, rising to 3,055 meters. Though called a crater, the great basin — about 11 kilometers long and 800 meters deep — was shaped mainly by erosion and later volcanic activity, its floor strewn with colorful cinder cones in shades of red, orange, and black that give it an almost Martian appearance.
Its name means 'House of the Sun' in Hawaiian, from the legend of the demigod Māui lassoing the sun from its summit, and watching sunrise above the clouds from the crater rim is a world-famous experience. Protected within Haleakalā National Park, the summit is also home to the rare silversword plant and the endangered nēnē goose.
