Pikes Peak
A 14,115-ft Colorado summit with vast plains views that inspired 'America the Beautiful.'
Overview
Pikes Peak, rising to 4,302 meters (14,115 feet) in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains near Colorado Springs, is one of the most famous mountains in the United States — a 'fourteener' whose summit offers staggering views over the Great Plains, the Rockies, and the city below. It was the sight from this summit that inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write the poem 'America the Beautiful' in 1893, with its 'purple mountain majesties.'
Uniquely accessible for such a high peak, the summit can be reached by a cog railway, a paved toll highway (the route of a famous auto hill-climb race), or a strenuous hike, making its panoramic alpine views available to a wide range of visitors. A new summit visitor complex perches at the top. Pikes Peak is a beloved Colorado landmark and one of the most visited mountains in North America.
