Rainy River Municipal
A public river in Ontario's vast lake and river country, with public boat and paddle access.
Overview
Rainy River Municipal is a public water in Ontario's vast lake and river country, open to boating, fishing and paddling. Anglers here target walleye, northern pike, muskellunge, smallmouth and largemouth bass, lake trout, yellow perch and panfish. The big lakes hold lake trout, and tributaries see salmon and steelhead runs.
Recreation
As moving water, it fishes by current — target seams, eddies, holes, bends and woody cover rather than open flats.
Public access points along Rainy River Municipal put boaters and paddlers on the water.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and fall are typically the most productive and comfortable times to fish here; summer brings the warmest water and the most boat traffic, and winter offers hard-water fishing once safe ice forms.
Safety
River current, woody snags, shifting sandbars and changing water levels are the main hazards. Respect the current, scout unfamiliar stretches, give way to any commercial traffic, and never anchor from the stern in a strong flow.
