Knowth
A great Irish passage tomb holding the largest collection of megalithic art in Western Europe.
Overview
Knowth, in Ireland's Boyne Valley, is one of the three great passage tombs of the Brú na Bóinne complex (with Newgrange and Dowth) and holds the largest concentration of megalithic art in Western Europe. Built around 3200 BC, its huge central mound — similar in size to Newgrange — contains two passages running to back-to-back chambers, and it is surrounded by some 18 smaller satellite tombs.
What sets Knowth apart is its extraordinary art: more than a third of all known megalithic art in Western Europe is carved on its kerbstones and within its passages, including spirals, lozenges, and crescents, along with what may be the earliest known depiction of the moon. Used and reused across thousands of years — by Neolithic builders, the Iron Age, early Christians, and Normans — Knowth, part of the Brú na Bóinne UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a layered monument of astonishing richness.
