Overview

Hyner View State Park occupies a dramatic cliff-top overlooking the West Branch Susquehanna River’s deep gorge in Clinton County, north-central Pennsylvania — one of the most breathtaking vantage points in the entire state. The overlook perches some 1,200 feet above the river valley, with the Susquehanna curling through the forested canyon far below and ridge after wooded ridge receding into the distance.

A tiny park in terms of acreage, Hyner View is famous beyond its size for the view — and for its renowned hang-gliding and paragliding launch site, where pilots soar on the updrafts from the cliff face over the gorge. An annual hang-gliding festival brings skilled pilots from across the region. For everyone else, the overlook offers a stunning, vertiginous panorama that ranks among the finest scenic viewpoints in Pennsylvania. A spectacular cliff-top perch, Hyner View is a treasured natural icon of Pennsylvania’s north-central wilds.

Recreation

Hyner View is known primarily for its cliff-top panorama — the dramatic overlook above the West Branch Susquehanna gorge, one of the finest viewpoints in Pennsylvania — and as a premier hang-gliding and paragliding launch site (the Hyner Challenge, a celebrated annual hang-gliding and paragliding competition, is held here). Short trails lead along the ridge near the overlook. The adjacent Hyner Run State Park (below the ridge) offers camping, creek swimming and trout fishing. The overlook view and the hang-gliding are the signature draws. The combination of a vertiginous cliff-top panorama and world-class soaring makes Hyner View a destination unlike any other in Pennsylvania.

Best Time to Visit

Fall is the classic season, when the forested ridges and the Susquehanna gorge below blaze with color — the view from Hyner in October is among the finest foliage panoramas in the state, and the autumn thermals bring the hang-gliders out. Spring brings the hang-gliding festival (the Hyner Challenge, typically in late April or May) and fresh green on the ridges. Summer offers the full updrafts for soaring and warm evenings at the overlook. The fall foliage view and the spring hang-gliding festival are the highlights — come in October for the color or spring for the festival and the soaring.

History

The West Branch Susquehanna gorge and the surrounding ridges were the domain of the lumber era in north-central Pennsylvania — a landscape that was heavily cut and then largely abandoned to second-growth forest, which has regrown into the magnificent woodland seen today. The overlook site was developed as Hyner View State Park by Pennsylvania DCNR, and over the decades it became a celebrated destination for the hang-gliding community, which found in its south-facing cliff and reliable updrafts an ideal launch site. The Hyner Challenge hang-gliding and paragliding competition has made the park known internationally in the soaring community while also drawing visitors to one of Pennsylvania’s finest viewpoints.

Geology

The overlook at Hyner View sits on a resistant sandstone and conglomerate ridge — part of the layered sedimentary rock of the Allegheny Plateau, uplifted during Appalachian mountain-building — that stands high above the West Branch Susquehanna, which has carved a deep gorge through the plateau over millions of years. The south-facing cliff face and the steep gorge walls create the dramatic relief and the updrafts that pilots ride. The plateau’s hard ridge rock, the river’s persistent down-cutting through the softer rock below, and the south-facing aspect that generates reliable thermals make Hyner View both a geological spectacle and a soaring paradise.

Wildlife

The Hyner View ridge and the West Branch Susquehanna gorge below support white-tailed deer, black bears, wild turkeys, and a notable raptor presence — the same updrafts that lift hang-gliders also carry migrating hawks, eagles and falcons along the ridge in autumn, making Hyner a good raptor-watching site. The gorge and the nearby Hyner Run hold trout. The surrounding Sproul State Forest provides vast additional habitat. The combination of the cliff updrafts and the forested gorge draws both raptors and pilots, and the fall migration adds a wildlife dimension to the already-spectacular autumn view from the overlook.

Ecology

Hyner View State Park sits within the broader Sproul State Forest landscape — one of the largest blocks of wild, forested public land in Pennsylvania — and the overlook cliff-face and the surrounding mixed hardwood forest on the ridge are part of this large, connected ecosystem. The West Branch Susquehanna gorge below supports wild trout. The regrown hardwood forest (recovering from the lumber era) covers the ridges in all directions, creating the forested panorama the overlook commands. Protecting the forest, the creek’s water quality and the undeveloped ridge landscape sustains the ecology and the spectacular viewshed from Hyner View.

Cultural Significance

Hyner View State Park holds a unique place in Pennsylvania — as both a premier scenic overlook, with one of the finest panoramas of the state’s north-central river gorge country, and as a celebrated destination in the hang-gliding and paragliding community, where the Hyner Challenge brings skilled pilots from across North America to soar above the Susquehanna gorge. The convergence of dramatic geography, soaring culture and spectacular fall foliage makes Hyner View a destination that rewards both the casual visitor and the adventurous spirit. It is a cherished natural and cultural icon of Pennsylvania’s Pennsylvania Wilds.

Access and Directions

Hyner View State Park is in Clinton County, north-central Pennsylvania, near the small community of Hyner on the West Branch Susquehanna River, reached via River Road (Route 44) and the park road up the ridge, about 30 miles west of Lock Haven and roughly 90 minutes from State College. There is no entrance fee. The park has the overlook area (with a hang-gliding launch ramp and spectator viewing), picnic facilities and short trails; Hyner Run State Park below offers camping and creek fishing. The ridge road may be limited in winter. Check PA DCNR for conditions, the hang-gliding competition schedule and access before visiting.

Conservation

Pennsylvania DCNR protects Hyner View State Park and the surrounding Sproul State Forest. Visitors help by staying back from the cliff edge (dangerous drop-offs; watch children), respecting the hang-gliding and paragliding launch areas (do not interfere with pilots and their equipment), staying on designated trails, protecting the forest and the ridge, packing out all trash, and following all rules. The cliff face, the launch ramp and the ridge are sensitive to overuse and safety issues. Protecting the cliff-top habitat, the viewshed and the soaring corridor sustains both the ecology and the spectacular character of Hyner View.

Safety

Hyner View’s cliff-top overlook has dangerous drop-offs — stay behind barriers and keep children and pets well back from the edge. Never approach the hang-gliding and paragliding launch ramp when pilots are launching (the area is active; give pilots space and watch from the designated spectator area). The ridge road can be steep, narrow and muddy or icy in wet or cold weather — use appropriate vehicles and check conditions. The area is remote, with limited cell service. Check in at Hyner Run State Park below for facilities. Respect the cliff edge, the active launch ramp and the remote, winding road.

Regulations

There is no entrance fee. Stay behind barriers at the cliff-top overlook; do not approach the launch ramp when pilots are operating. Hang-gliding and paragliding are regulated at the park — pilots must follow all launch rules and safety protocols. Stay on designated trails; do not disturb the ridge vegetation. Pets must be leashed. Drones may conflict with aircraft — check rules and coordinate with pilots. Pack out all trash. The ridge road may be closed or restricted in winter. Check PA DCNR for current rules, the hang-gliding competition schedule and road conditions before visiting.

Nearby Attractions

The West Branch Susquehanna River corridor, Hyner Run State Park (below the ridge, with camping and creek fishing), the town of Lock Haven (with Piper Aviation Museum, home of the famous Piper Cub aircraft), the Sproul State Forest, and the broader Pennsylvania Wilds region surround Hyner View. The Pennsylvania Wilds and the West Branch Susquehanna define the region. Hyner View is the signature viewpoint of Pennsylvania’s wild north-central river gorge country, easily combined with Hyner Run camping, the Sproul State Forest, Lock Haven and the Pennsylvania Wilds.

Tips

Come to the overlook at Hyner View for one of the finest panoramas in Pennsylvania — especially in fall, when the forested ridges and the Susquehanna gorge far below explode with color. Watch the hang-gliders and paragliders launching from the ramp and soaring effortlessly on the updrafts above the gorge (or attend the Hyner Challenge competition in spring for a spectacular show of skill). Stay well back from the cliff edge, arrive in good light for the best view, and pair your visit with camping and trout fishing at Hyner Run State Park below in the gorge — then explore the Sproul State Forest and Lock Haven.
